Nestled in Zhongguancun, Beijing’s innovation hub, adjacent to China Agricultural University (CAU), Meilun Hotel is more than a regular business hotel—it’s a bridge between academic exchange and commercial hospitality. Catering mainly to CAU’s faculty, visiting scholars, academic conference attendees, and business travelers, the hotel demands furniture that blends intellectual elegance, functional practicality, and long-lasting durability. For Dushang Hotel Furniture Factory, this project was a unique opportunity to tailor solutions for a hotel with dual academic and business attributes, breaking away from the generic hotel furniture mold.
Unlike luxury resorts or boutique tent B&Bs, Meilun Hotel’s core need is “versatility”—furniture that serves both formal academic scenarios (such as small seminars, thesis defenses, and faculty receptions) and daily business stays. This required us to abandon the one-size-fits-all approach and focus on “scene-adaptive design,” where each piece of furniture could seamlessly transition between different uses while maintaining a cohesive aesthetic.
Our design direction centered on understated elegance and functional flexibility, echoing the hotel’s proximity to CAU’s academic atmosphere. We avoided overly trendy or flashy designs, opting for clean lines, neutral color palettes (beige, light gray, and warm oak), and a minimalist yet sophisticated look that complements both academic formality and business comfort. For guest rooms, we prioritized workspace functionality—each room was equipped with a spacious desk with adjustable height, ergonomic chairs, and built-in cable management to accommodate laptops, projectors, and academic materials, catering to scholars who need to work during their stay.
Material selection was driven by high-frequency use and low maintenance, critical for a hotel that hosts a steady flow of academic and business guests. We chose high-quality solid wood multi-layer boards with a matte finish, which resists scratches and stains from frequent use, and is easy to clean. Upholstery fabrics were selected for breathability, wear resistance, and a professional appearance—dark gray and beige fabrics that hide minor stains, ensuring furniture looks neat and presentable even after long-term use. For conference rooms, we used sturdy, stackable chairs and modular tables that can be rearranged quickly for different meeting sizes, from small group discussions to large academic seminars.
A key focus of this project was collaboration with the hotel’s management and CAU’s academic team. We held multiple consultations to understand the specific needs of academic guests—such as the need for extra storage space for books and research materials, and the requirement for quiet, stable furniture that doesn’t distract during meetings. We also adjusted our production timeline to align with the hotel’s opening schedule, ensuring furniture was delivered and installed on time for CAU’s annual academic conference.

This collaboration with Meilun Hotel taught us that furnishing a hotel rooted in academic and business contexts is about more than just making durable furniture—it’s about understanding the unique needs of a niche guest group and creating solutions that support their work and stay. The final result? Practical, elegant furniture that enhances the hotel’s academic-business integration, earning praise from CAU faculty and business travelers alike. For Dushang, this project reaffirms our ability to adapt to specialized hotel scenarios, delivering custom solutions that honor the hotel’s unique positioning and guest needs.
