Honghe Hani and Yi Autonomous Prefecture in Yunnan is celebrated for its terraced landscapes, ethnic diversity, and idyllic rural charm. Hexie Countryside Pastoral B&B, a boutique hospitality project rooted in this region, embarked on a comprehensive renovation to transform aging farmhouses into a modern yet authentic rural retreat—one that honors local heritage while meeting the expectations of contemporary slow-travel guests. When Dushang Hotel Furniture Factory joined the project, our mandate extended far beyond supplying new furniture: we were tasked with adapting custom solutions to existing rural architecture and infusing the space with the soul of Honghe’s countryside life.
What set this project apart from ground-up hotel builds was its focus on renovation compatibility and rural authenticity. Unlike urban hotels with standardized layouts or luxury resorts with purpose-built spaces, the B&B’s core structure consisted of repurposed farmhouses with irregular room sizes, low ceilings, and traditional wooden beam frames. The biggest challenge was creating furniture that fit seamlessly into these existing spaces without compromising structural integrity, while avoiding the “themed” kitsch that often plagues rural accommodations.
Our design philosophy centered on “harmonious integration”—blending functional modernity with rural simplicity. We rejected mass-produced furniture in favor of custom-sized pieces tailored to each unique room. For guest suites converted from old farmhouses, we designed low-profile bed frames and slim-line wardrobes to accommodate low ceilings, using reclaimed teak and local pine to echo the B&B’s wooden structural beams. Subtle ethnic touches were woven in organically: hand-woven Yi embroidery accents on cushion covers and Hani-style geometric carvings on bedside table legs, sourced from local craftsmen to ensure cultural authenticity.
Material selection was guided by two priorities: adaptability to rural conditions and sustainability. Recognizing the B&B’s remote location—with limited access to professional maintenance—we chose solid wood composites treated with weather-resistant, scratch-proof finishes that can withstand dust, temperature fluctuations, and occasional moisture from the terraced fields. Upholstery fabrics were selected for durability and ease of care, using washable linen blends in earthy greens and terracottas that mirror the colors of Honghe’s rice terraces and red soil. In a nod to the project’s eco-conscious vision, we repurposed old farmhouse wooden planks into accent tables and shelf units, reducing waste and adding layers of local history.
The renovation phase demanded exceptional precision. Our design team conducted on-site measurements multiple times to account for the farmhouses’ uneven walls and sloped floors, adjusting furniture dimensions down to the centimeter. For areas with exposed wooden beams, we integrated built-in storage solutions that wrap around the beams, turning architectural constraints into design features. During production, we pre-assembled key components in our factory and conducted dry runs to ensure they would fit through the B&B’s narrow, traditional doorways— a critical detail often overlooked in standard projects.
Collaboration was the cornerstone of success. We worked hand-in-hand with the B&B’s owners, local architects, and even village craftsmen throughout the process. The owners shared invaluable insights into rural hospitality—such as the need for extra storage for hiking gear and large dining tables for group guests sharing home-cooked Hani meals. Local craftsmen joined our installation team to add hand-finished details, fostering skill exchange between our factory team and the rural community.
The completed project has breathed new life into Hexie Countryside Pastoral B&B. The custom furniture not only solves the practical challenges of renovation but also tells a story of Honghe’s land and people, creating a stay that feels both comfortable and deeply authentic. For Dushang, this project reaffirms our ability to go beyond standard manufacturing: we don’t just make furniture—we create solutions that respect existing spaces, honor local culture, and revitalize unique hospitality destinations, one rural B&B at a time.
